Q2, expansion of component supply to China and enhanced MLCC supply capabilities
Samsung Electro-Mechanics has announced that they have generated 2.188 trillion won in revenues and 154 billion won in operating profits in Q1 of this year. When compared with Q4 of last year, revenues have increased by 18% and operating profits by 44%; when compared with the same period last year (2017 Q1), revenues increased by 29% and operating profits by 503%.
Samsung Electro-Mechanics announced that, despite Q1 being an off-season, their results showed overall improvement due to the expanded supply of advanced camera modules to strategic customers and increased MLCC (Multi-Layer Ceramic Capacitor) sales. The company plans on maintaining this growth momentum in Q2 by expanding the supply of camera modules with new functionality to Chinese customers and strategically responding to increased MLCC demand.
※ Q1 Results by Area of Business and Forecasts
The Module Solution business unit generated 899.8 billion won in revenues, a 55% increase over the previous quarter, due to the increased supply of advanced camera modules that are the first to have variable apertures and high resolution lenses. For Q2, there are plans to expand the supply of new products with advanced functions, such as dual cameras, to Chinese partners. Furthermore, the growth of the automated driving and advanced driver assist systems (ADAS) market is expected to lead to revenue growth for electronics-use camera modules.
The Component Solution business unit generated 753 billion won in revenues, an 8% increase over the previous quarter, due to the expanded supply of high margin IT-use MLCC and industrial/automotive components. For Q2, the insufficient MLCC supply situation is expected to continue, so the company intends to respond to the market demand by improving productivity at overseas plants, and to improve profitability by increasing the proportion of high margin products. Furthermore, an enhanced automotive product line is planned due to the expansion of electronics in automobiles.
The Substrate Solution business unit generated 357.1 billion won in revenues, an 18% reduction over the previous quarter, due to reduced supply of OLED-use RFPCD (Rigid Flex Printed Circuit Board). Samsung Electro-Mechanics plans on actively responding to this by strengthening its competitive edge in development and quality so as to expand the supply of the new OLED-use RFPCB that will be released in the second half of this year.
