9,075Km of Love, 25 Years of Rural Volunteer Activities2019-06-24
Since 1995, Samsung Electro-Mechanics has been involved in summer rural volunteer activities for 25 years, serving remote rural areas all over the country. It is Samsung Electro-Mechanics’ longest-running volunteering program, and participating employees have walked 23,000 Ri (9,075Km) during these 25 years! This year was no exception, as we extended helping hands to rural residents.
The Suwon and Sejong Plants joined hands for this year’s rural volunteer activities, assisting a sister village called Daeyado Village in Taean, Chungcheongnam-do from June 21st to June 23rd. In addition to painting murals and buildings, the volunteers helped the busy village by doing various tasks such as changing light bulbs, working on house wiring, and harvesting potatoes.
The Busan Plant paid a visit to its sister village in Jeonggok-myeon, Uiryeong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do and engaged in a wide range of volunteer activities for local residents, including replacing LED lights, harvesting crops, replacing insect screens, and taking family photos.
The rural volunteer activity began as simple program to help out with farm labor, but as the program continued, it has been diversified in various ways to meet the practical needs of local villagers, such as by offering wiring replacements for old houses, electronic device repairs, family photo shoots, and hand acupuncture treatments.
On top of its rural volunteering activities, the roughly 200 volunteering groups at Samsung Electro-Mechanics are involved in a wide range of other social contribution projects including sisterhood agreements with multiple villages, the Hello! SEM orchestra (Suwon), the Disable Student Music Competition (Sejong), the National Disabled Persons Badminton Tournament (Busan), and much more.
