Samsung Electro-Mechanics has acquired "Zero Waste To Landfill (ZWTL)" certification for its Suwon and Sejong plants from UL Solutions, a global safety science company. As the Busan plant successfully achieved Zero Waste To Landfill Gold validation following last year, Samsung Electro-Mechanics' all manufacturing sites in Korea are now ZWTL-certified.

ZWTL grants different grades based on how much industrial waste is recycled – Platinum for 100 percent, Gold for 95 to 99%, and Silver for 90 to 94%. The certification is used as an indicator to evaluate a company's resource recycling efforts, and is validated by UL Solutions.

The average resource recycling rate of Samsung Electro-Mechanics' Suwon plant achieved Platinum designation with an average resource recycling rate of 100%, while the Sejong plant obtained Gold status with 96%.

After establishing the goal of "zero waste emissions" in 2019, Samsung Electro-Mechanics has invested in waste recycling facilities and succeeded in developing a new type of fuel. To recycle trace amounts of copper in wastewater sludge, the company improved the copper concentration facility in wastewater treatment plants and installed a high-efficiency draining facility, resulting in the recycling of 2,658 tons of wastewater sludge over the past three years. Moreover, by replacing and reusing plastic items used in the manufacturing process and cafeterias, 226 tons of plastic waste were reduced a year, which is equivalent to 22.6 times the size of a soccer field.

Samsung Electro-Mechanics is conducting various campaigns and social contribution activities to raise employees' awareness of resource recycling. The company collected 1,462 mobile phones over the three years through the “Mobile Phone Collection Campaign” to support underserved communities with the proceeds from recycling metals collected from discarded mobile phones. In addition, through a campaign to provide toilet paper made from recycled milk cartons to underserved groups, Samsung Electro-Mechanics donated 1,097 rolls of toilet paper by recycling 1,420 kg of milk cartons.

Chang Duckhyun, CEO of Samsung Electro-Mechanics, said, "For sustainable management, we prioritize 3p – fulfilling our environmental responsibility (Planet), the pursuit of happiness for members of society (People), and sustainable growth (Progress). We pursue to be a green IT company that considers the environment in all processes of product production.”

Samsung Electro-Mechanics has established a data-based roadmap through a dedicated ESG department in an effort to systematically fulfill its social corporate responsibility. Samsung Electro-Mechanics’ sustainability activities have been recognized by various evaluation organizations, such as being selected for the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI) for 13 consecutive years, becoming the first in the industry to obtain “environmental footprint” certification from the Carbon Trust, and being included in the FTSE4Good Index for 11 straight years.
