Samsung Electro-Mechanics' Suwon plant was selected as a "Leader in Resource Circulation with Outstanding Performance" at the Resource Circulation Day commemoration ceremony hosted by the Ministry of Environment on September 6, winning the highest honor of the President's Award.

The Leader in Resource Circulation Award hosted by the Ministry of Environment recognizes companies that have contributed to the promotion of resource circulation by reducing and recycling waste generated in the production process. The evaluation criteria include the commitment of the management to improve the resource circulation goal, establishment of a waste generation and treatment system, and promotion of waste recycling.

Samsung Electro-Mechanics recycled 94.8% of waste and reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 14,000 tons through green management activities such as waste recycling and reduction. Samsung Electro-Mechanics set a goal of "zero waste emissions" in 2019 and has continued to invest in the construction of waste recycling facilities and the development of new fuels and treatment methods.

In particular, the company established a tracking management system for the entire cycle of waste generation, discharge, and treatment, and has recycled 100% of the alkali generated in the manufacturing process as a pH adjuster for wastewater treatment and wastewater sludge by extracting the organic metals.

In addition, about 14,000 tons of GHG emissions were reduced by recycling incinerated waste, which is equivalent to the amount of greenhouse gas absorbed by 15,000 pine trees per year.

Meanwhile, Samsung Electro-Mechanics is actively practicing green management in everyday life through Miracle Routine, a voluntary resource circulation campaign among its employees.

The company has implemented a campaign called "Empty, Rinse, Separate, and Don’t Mix" by dividing the office waste bins into five compartments by type. Samsung Electro-Mechanics has also reduced 226 tons of plastic waste were reduced a year, which is equivalent to 22.6 times the size of a soccer field. Furthermore, the company donated toilet paper recycled from milk cartons to underserved communities.

Samsung Electro-Mechanics CEO Chang Duckhyun said, “Green management is an essential area for a company's sustainable growth. We will strive to reduce pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions by minimizing wastewater and waste and efficiently using resources and energy."

Samsung Electro-Mechanics established an ESG committee within the Board of Directors in 2021 to manage and oversee environmental, social, and governance-related policies and key issues at the board level, and has implemented differentiated eco-friendly management policies by defining three focus areas (resource circulation, reduction of GHG emissions, and improvement of water efficiency) that reflect the management’s ESG commitment.

Samsung Electro-Mechanics’ sustainability efforts have been recognized by various evaluation organizations, such as being listed in the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI) for 13 consecutive years, becoming the first in the industry to obtain “environmental footprint” certification from the Carbon Trust, and being included in the FTSE4Good Index for 12 straight years, and all plants in Korea obtaining "Zero Waste To Landfill (ZWTL)" certification.
