Samsung Electro-Mechanics announced on February 9 that it has been named to the Platinum Club, the highest rank in the 2022 CDP climate change response assessment.
The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) is a global non-profit organization that annually discloses climate change response strategies, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions information, and reduction efforts of major listed companies around the world and provides them to investors and financial institutions. CDP assessment results are recognized as one of the most reliable sustainability evaluation indicators, along with the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) and the FTSE4Good index.
The CDP climate change response assessment evaluated 88 items, including the calculation and verification of GHG emissions, and reduction targets for 18,700 global and 300 Korean companies.
Samsung Electro-Mechanics received high scores in the overall evaluation criteria for establishing an organization dedicated to climate change response, ▲promoting switching to renewable energy in overseas sites, ▲introducing high-efficiency, energy-saving equipment such as freezers, and ▲disclosing Scope 3 GHG emissions generated in the entire product cycle from processing to transportation to disposal.
Samsung Electro-Mechanics has participated in CDP since 2009 and has been inducted into the CDP Hall of Fame eight times since 2014, proving its excellence in carbon management.
Meanwhile, Samsung Electro-Mechanics won the Excellence Award in water management, CDP's water resource category. Samsung Electro-Mechanics recorded a water reuse rate of 24% as of the end of 2021 by setting a water reduction target and making active efforts.
Chang Duckhyun, CEO of Samsung Electro-Mechanics, said, “As there is a growing interest in environmental protection, Samsung Electro-Mechanics is incorporating the environment into our management activities and strategies. We will strengthen our environment and energy management system and strive to achieve carbon neutrality."
Samsung Electro-Mechanics created the ESG Committee within the Board of Directors in 2021 to manage and supervise environmental, social, and governance-related policies and major issues at the board level. The company has differentiated its environmental management by establishing three key initiatives (reducing GHG emissions, increasing water resource efficiency, and resource circulation) that reflect management's commitment to environmental sustainability.
Samsung Electro-Mechanics’ sustainability efforts have been recognized by various evaluation organizations, such as becoming the first in the industry to obtain “carbon footprint” certification from the Carbon Trust, being included in the FTSE4Good index for 12 consecutive years, and earning "Zero Waste To Landfill (ZWTL)" validation for all plants in Korea.
