Samsung Electro-Mechanics has signed a silicon capacitor supply contract worth approximately 1.5 trillion KRW with a global large-scale company. The contract period is for two years, from January 1, 2027 to December 31, 2028.

This contract marks the first large-scale supply achievement in the silicon capacitor business, which has been fostered as a new growth engine. Silicon capacitors are ultra-compact, high-performance capacitors manufactured based on silicon wafers. They are installed inside high-performance semiconductor packages such as GPUs for AI servers and High Bandwidth Memory (HBM), enhancing the stability of power supply. With this, Samsung Electro-Mechanics has begun to accelerate its entry into the next-generation AI infrastructure market.

Recently, as the amount of data processed by AI semiconductors has surged, power consumption has also increased significantly. In particular, AI server packages are larger in area and have an increased number of layers compared to those for general PCs, making power supply stability and securing signal integrity emerge as key competitive factors. Since performance degradation or errors can occur even with sudden power fluctuations, the importance of silicon capacitors—which remove noise and supply stable power at the closest location to the semiconductor—is growing.

Silicon capacitors have over 100 times lower resistance (ESL/ESR) compared to conventional MLCCs, minimizing signal loss occurring in high-performance semiconductors. In addition, they are designed with an ultra-thin structure based on silicon wafers, enabling high-density integration, and feature maintaining stable performance even in high-voltage and high-temperature environments.

Due to high technological entry barriers and strict customer certification processes, the silicon capacitor market has been oligopolized by a small number of companies.

Leveraging its ultra-fine process capabilities accumulated in the conventional MLCC and package substrate businesses, Samsung Electro-Mechanics has successfully entered the core supply chain for AI semiconductors. Starting with this large-scale contract, Samsung Electro-Mechanics plans to diversify its supply destinations not only to AI servers but also to high-performance computing fields such as autonomous driving systems and mobile devices.

President Chang Duckhyun said, "This contract will serve as an important milestone for Samsung Electro-Mechanics to solidify its position as a total solution provider of core components in the AI era," adding, "We will further strengthen cooperation with global customers by expanding our product lineup in the future."
